Roku SD Player Review

My title pretty much sums up my feeling about the Roku-there may be no other media related product on the market that gives you the bang for the buck like the Roku. The set-up is easy-very intuitive for anyone with even a modicum of experience hooking up a TV system or a PC. The picture quality is surprisingly good. I’m actually kicking myself for not buying the HD version of the unit. And I’m streaming via wireless, which really impressed me (I was ready to move the TV to a room where I could attached the ethernet cable.)

Long story short, for the price you can’t go wrong with the Roku.

Roku SD Player Feature

  • Start watching movies on your TV in seconds using your high-speed Internet connection
  • Instantly plays the entire Netflix Instant Watch library with your Netflix membership - no additional subscription cost required
  • Plays DVD-quality video on any TV
  • Built-in wireless (Wi-Fi) as well as wired internet connectivity
  • Sets up in 5 minutes

Roku SD Player Overview

This was a breeze to install, works great. It is like having a video library at home. I think the only thing missing is closed captioning.

Expected More - Shannon Malanson - Hartford, CT
I recently purchased a Roku and I must say its ok. Im going to start with the bad stuff. 1) Its small with an even smaller remote. I wish the remote was larger so I wont lose it as much and without the remote its basically useless. 2)I have Netflix live stream on my 360 already and it will make suggestions or show you the last videos you’ve watched or show you videos in categories. Roku does not do this. The only thing it displays is what is in your instant queue. 3) if you are watching a series (mine is Lost)It shows you the last episode you watch and does not automatically show you the next one on your list. 360 never did this. 4) if you started watching a movie and you have to stop and come back to it, it does not tell you in time how much of the movie you completed. Again the 360 showed you how much of the show you have completed. 5)Power cord way too short. 6) Last and probably my biggest issue is where is the POWER BUTTON on the darn thing. You plug it in and its good to go but there is no POWER BUTTON. If there is can someone please let me know.

Setup was really easy. 10 min tops and I was watching movies. I havent tried the other channels because Im too busy watching movies. I have had no issues with the quality of the picture or the sound. Controls are smooth and easy. If you have Netflix and want a better item than your PC to watch live stream. Stick to the 360. Its more $$ but its worth it

Roku HD1000 High-Definition Digital Media Player Review

I bought the Roku HD1000 so that I could display digital photos in HD on my TV. I was not disappointed. In fact, the results were outstanding! If you use a memory stick, SD card, or compact flash disk, the setup couldn’t be easier.

If you want to get files from your PC over a network things get more complicated. Not complicated in a technology sense, but in a user interface sense. You need to do a bunch of clicking to get things set up.

If you want to play music from your computer, the interface becomes a hassle. You end up browsing through a hierarchy of folders to find the song you want, and it’s basically not worth the trouble.

I already own an Audiotron, which does for music what the Roku does for photos, and it’s so much easier to use that the Roku will be a photo-only device for me. The Audiotron saves you the endless folder browsing by automatically searching the entire network for music, and then organizing it for you. It allows you to very quickly choose music by artist, album name, song title, or genre. The Roku could do with a lot of improvement in this area.

The irony is that if the Roku had been billed as being for photos only, I’d have given it 5 stars. It’s really the only game in town if you want high definition photo display on a TV, and it’s terrific! For trying to be a video and music solution as well, and being poor to fair in those categories, I deduct a star. If you want a solution for music or video, buy something else.

Roku HD1000 High-Definition Digital Media Player Feature

  • High-definition media player supports 1080i, 720p, and 480p outputs for optimal viewing on high-definition and HD-ready TVs
  • Designed for convenient living room slide shows and MP3/linear PCM music playback from your memory cards or personal computer
  • Compatible with Roku Art Packs and LiveArt (not included) for high-definition wall art from still and motion images
  • CompactFlash, SD, MMC, Memory Stick, and SmartMedia slots
  • Can be networked with your PC through an Ethernet port or Wi-Fi

Roku HD1000 High-Definition Digital Media Player Overview

The Roku HD1000 is the first high-definition digital media player, designed to make the most of your HDTV’s brilliant color and clarity. Tap into your home computer network or pop in a memory card to enjoy high-definition digital photos, art, LiveArt, music, and third party applications. The Roku HD1000 is based on the Roku OS, an open platform that includes Roku’s advanced media APIs and the Linux Kernel.

Roku HD1000 High-Definition Digital Media Player Specifications

Amazon.com Product Description Early Adopters Pick: October 2003. This is the world’s first high-definition digital media player.

Whether you’re already equipped with a high-definition TV or still using a standard CRT set, the HD1000 from Roku puts all manner of digital entertainment before your eyes and ears. Tap into a home computer network, hook the unit up to a stereo, or simply pop in a memory card–then sit back and enjoy your favorite photos, artworks, music, or LiveArt (full-motion images of beaches, waterfalls, etc.).

While it will work on nearly any monitor, the HD1000 was designed to make the most of a high-definition television’s brilliant color and pristine clarity. The HD1000 makes viewing and sharing treasured digital photos easier and more exciting than ever. Photos displayed through the device will look crystal-clear on your high-definition or big-screen TV. No more crowding around a PC monitor in your cluttered den–the HD1000 lets you relax and view digital slideshows in a leisurely atmosphere.

Not watching a program on your wall-mounted plasma display? Now you can create stunning wall art with a click of your remote. Roku’s Art Packs (not included) are a simple way to enhance your décor and make use out of an idle HDTV. Choose from a range of images–classic masterpieces, stunning nature scenes, or a lifelike aquarium–and bring them to life in your living room. Or, use LiveArt to change your surroundings without changing your location. Bring a rippling mountain lake, a leafy summer forest, or a white sand beach with soothing waves to turn your living room into a pool of peace and tranquility. The HD1000 supports looping HD MPEG2, standard JPEG images, and MPEG clips. (Art Packs come on CompactFlash memory cards; just pop in the card and choose your favorite scenery.)

Next, liberate your growing library of digital music files from your PC and listen to them through a home stereo. Roku lets you listen to files on any of various memory cards (CompactFlash, SD, MMC, Memory Stick, SmartMedia) or over a simple Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection, so you can enjoy your favorite music through the high-quality sound system in your living room. Its attractive onscreen display shows the current media source and displays its contents as well as the media file in play, with full ID3 data for music files.

The HD1000 offers built-in protection to reduce the risk of image burn-in on your TV screen, too. (The unit can’t prevent all types of burn-in, of course–it’s ultimately your responsibility to use your display’s manual and common sense to prevent burn-in.) The HD1000’s Screen Saver mode engages when the HD1000 is your primary video source, and it can even step in whenever one of your other video sources stops moving. When placed in a pass-through configuration–with the signal from a DVD player, say, passing through the HD1000 on its way to a screen–the HD1000 can detect when the video input source is still and will automatically generate a changing Screen Saver.

The HD1000 is based on the Roku OS, an open platform that includes Roku’s advanced media APIs and the Linux Kernel, and for which other companies can design as-yet-undreamed-of accessories.

What’s in the Box
HD1000, user’s manual, remote control, remote batteries (two AAA), a component-video cable, a stereo analog audio interconnect, and an AC power cable.

Good product for the bleeding edge adopter - Paul M - SF, CA. United States
The Photobridge is a nice product if you are looking for a bridge device between your PC and your HDTV. The product is of the most use with the 2.x “beta” version of the software and a couple of third party applications called Mplay and SlimRoku. It takes a healthy understanding of computers to get this device working, and with the above software and a 100Mb network connection there is little this device wont do. If you really want good information I would recommend looking at the forums on www.rokulabs.com and look under the Third Party applications topic for the Photobridge.

It’s so not what it could be :-( - B. Goldberg - bay area
I had high hopes for this unit and quicky discoverd it ain’t what I’m loking for. For starters, the company openly states their goal as being to use their consumer electronics products as simple proof-of-concept products to highlight what the hardware and softare can do. They’re not their to provide end-solutions - they’re an OEM manufacturerer. That justifies the beta software, which I installed and ended up frying my machine, so it’s going back tomorrow. Also keep in mind that it’s a shell with bare-bones functionality, and you’re expected to downlaod and run a thrird party app to actually mke it run, There are 2 or 3 available, but that’s a lot less palatable than having the functiomality built it.

Good Luck!’

Not what I expected - Robert Dodd - Baltimore
Purchased the HD1000 for audio streaming and photograph display. The high definition digital display of photographs is great. Easy to set up and use. The audio capability is much more limited and not at all easy to use. I believe Roku is somewhat misleading in their claims about the audio capability of this unit. Many popular formats are not supported although Roku suggests using third part software. This is very limited and I am not a fan of having to use third part software to upgrade a product to meet its marketing claims. If audio is important to you, look elsewhere. I am disappointed with the device.

Roku HD Player Review

This little gadget blended into my wireless home network easily and I was watching movies from Netflix within minutes. In fact it worked so well I ordered another for my son’s bedroom and canceled HBO and Cinemax from my cable company . I will thereby recover the cost of both boxes in ten months. Meanwhile we can watch a free movie whenever we like with our basic subscription to Netflix. Can’t be beat for value.
I had trouble with the second box not identifying my network and called for tech. help. The tech walked me through the settings of my network and we were able to identify the problem which turned out to be I was entering the wrong password (Duh!) My bad. Excellent service. Both units working fine now and the whole family is very pleased. I have a very fast Cable modem with two desk computers,a laptop, Vonage Voip. and the two Roku boxes now on the network nothing seems to have slowed down even when everything is being used.

Worth every penny! - Apollo Creed - MO
We’ve had the Roku for about three weeks now, have used it every day, and are very happy with it. No freeze-ups or failures to load the videos so far. Installation and synching with Netflix, MLB.TV, and Amazon accounts was very easy. Loading time when I make a viewing selection is 2-5 seconds. Picture quality and sound are terrific.

The only thing I wish was different is navigation on the Netflix instant queue. You have to scroll through the movies one at a time. I have more than 150 movies in queue, so it would be nice to be able to go from #1 to #150 and back to #60 quickly.

Works great But - Ralph E Blanch - Snohomish, WA.
Works great but I might not have bought it if I had known it did not support closed captioning. Buyers who normaly use C/C should think twice about this product. The install instructions too limited for a non electronic person to get easy.I had to get my son to tell me I had to tune the t/v to a different mode to get it to work.

THIS IS AWESOME WATCH MOVIES 24 HOURS A DAY - Ron Dossey - Hurricane, Utah
IT TOOK LESS THAN 5 MINUTES TO SET UP. WORKS GREAT. WORTH THE MONEY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS.

Roku HD Player Review

I’ve been researching ways to increase my cable channel happiness and reduce the costs. My research started a while ago, but a Cosumerist post about subscriber fees really got my goat. Look at all the junk channels that we are forced to pay for. I could care less about any sports channel or 90% of everything else. It is my opinion that we should be able to choose extra channels separately after we hook up with basic cable. You’ll also notice that BH charges extra for a special HD tier. Sure it’s only a month, but geez, look how much markup there is. Anyways, you get the idea. I don’t have any issues with BH. They’ve served me well for a few years. But I need more of what I want. Not what BH thinks I want.

So, I dropped down to basic cable and purchased a Roku HD unit. Set-up was a snap. I used HDMI for the TV and stream with a N router.

OMFG! This thing is amazing! In short, it streams unlimited Netflix offerings to your TV. The cheapest Netflix subscription () is all you need. Plus it streams Amazon Video On Demand, and a bunch of internet channels. You can stream wirelessly or hard wire with an ethernet cable.

Can you tell I’m excited? Anytime I can boost my entertainment for less dollars is always a good day. The Roku will pay for itself in 2 months after switching to basic. And its HD!

Sigh…I must go.

I’ve been watching the original Dr. Who from the 60’s.

Excellent, makes a great service (Netflix) even better! - Eric Schoutens - Hayden, ID USA
Been a Netflix fan and member for years. Finally, after installing some network wiring around the house, we decided take a chance on a Roku box rather than have to pay a monthly fee for another cable box. Our expectations have far been exceeded. The picture quality is great on Netflix and the Pandora music service is a welcome bonus. One suggestion, be sure to keep the box plugged into power and connected to the network at all times. We struggled a bit when we first had it plugged into the switched out on the back of our surround receiver. This caused it to have to reboot and fully reload the queue each time we tried to use it. Directly plugging it into the surge strip solved all our issues.

Roku Rocks ! - A. Ross - Grafton, Ohio United States
Absolutely Brilliant!, does exactly what it say’s it’s going to do, no fuss, no muss set up, hooked it up to an Onkyo A/V. sharing an HDMI switch with a Oppo DVD player. Great picture and sound. Can’t speak more highly of this product.

best 99.99 I ever spent - D. White - houston
This is without a doubt the best 99.99 I ever spent. I hooked it up to my wireless network and it was so so easy. This product is very user friendly. So far I have not used the Amazon on Demand service, and since everything else is practically free as long as you pay 9.00 a month to Netflix, it’s a no brainer. I have ATT Pro Internet, which is their midrange service, and movies download in about 10 seconds. I watch a lot of stuff in HD, and the picture is the best I have ever seen. I pay 60.00 a month to my cable company and don’t even get HD channels. The cable companies better watch out—if this thing catches on and more providers sign up to deliver product, I could see the cable companies literally going out of business. If you have this neat little toy, all you really need to stay connected is high speed Internet and a cell phone—bye bye cable—and good riddance! If I could think of one minus, and it’s a really small one, is that there is no way to drill down and get to the guts of this thing and play around with advanced settings. If your a true tech geek, you might find it a little bland. It’s almost too simple.

Roku HD-XR Player Review

I recently got a subscription to Netflix. My wife wanted to be able to stream movies to living room tv. I heard some good things about the Roku and plus it had MLB season pass on it.

I got it in the mail. It was sent in the actual Product box no extra packaging to protect it. Luckily it was OK upon arrival. I am not sure if it was sent by Roku or Amazon.

The main problem I had was we still have an SD CRT TV in the living room. I got this unit because eventually we are getting a HDTV. So when I first connected it to the SD TV the image was all scrambled and I could not get it set up. So I connected to a computer monitor that had HDMI input. I had to set the video output to 4:3. I disconnected it and hooked it back up to the SD TV, evidently when you disconnect power it will revert back to 16:9. So I hooked it back up to computer monitor and wrote down what sequence of buttons to push to get it back to 4:3. Reconnected to SD ran through the sequence of buttons to push and still scrambled in 4:3. I turned the unit off with remote and back on and then the image was fine.

Also, at least for me it was kind of a pain to get the Roku, Netflix activated. It would kick out the code if you wait to long to enter it from Netflix. So I got the laptop out and got next to the box and as soon as the Code appeared online I entered it. That seem to work.

Documentation and Support FAQ is skimpy. I never got a chance to see if there is a forum.

Considering the problems I had once I got it set up and working the box worked far better than I had hoped(at 1.5 mbs) so I gave 4 stars. It is even better watching Netflix on TV than a computer. A netflix account at .00 a month is better than HBO, Cinemax and Showtime combined.

If you have this box hooked up to HDTV(HDMI) you should have no problems setting up the unit.

I hope this review helps.

Thanks Roku and Netflix for making TV fun again!

Inconsistent! Glitchy! - duskers -
So, I probably shouldn’t be reviewing this product right now, as I’m super pissed at my Roku player. We were in the middle of watching the Cove in HD via Amazon on Demand through the Roku player, and the player drops dead center of the movie. It does this all the time. i’ve tried restarting, tried to retrieve about 30 times, called amazon (for the movie to see if ws On Demand’s side). It is not our Internet, we have DSL all other devices connect fine (2 laptops 1 iPhone). Roku has no tech support. The player is totally glitchy. It’s a great idea, but has a lot of kinks to work out. We’ve had the player now since the end of December 09. It generally only drops when you’re watching something you’re really enjoying. I would not buy this product again, I would find another streamer.

Roku-HD XR - M. Jackman - SW Washington
I bought this directly from the Roku website due to the free shipping they’re offering, it was shipped quickly (I ordered it on a Saturday and it was delivered the following Wednesday). Got the XR version because I’m fairly certain that they’ll eventually be releasing an upgrade that will allow you to connect an external hard drive to it. First let me address the setup, for my situation it was seamless, very easy and I had it up and running in a few minutes. It detected my LinkSys WRT54GS wireless modem without any trouble, and I didn’t have any problem entering my security key. I haven’t had any hiccups occur while streaming content off of Netflix whatsoever, and at this point I’ve watched quite a few movies and television series through it (got totally caught up with Lost, all past seasons of that show are available for streaming). The HD content looks very good on my 32″ Vizio Plasma, and the non-HD content looks great too. Now if they’d add a channel for Hulu then I’d just cut out the cable tv completely, but unfortunately they haven’t done that yet so I’m still streaming that content through my Wii by using the playon software.

Great little unit for viewing online video - Willie - Central Illinois
Bought this unit to use with my Netflix subscription. It was very easy to hook-up and contains plenty of output “types” to support whatever equipment you have. The instructions for hooking up the unit to Netflix was straightforward as well. Picture quality is good as long as the Netflix servers can keep up with the demand. For example, there are times when the sound and picture are “separated” but I believe that is Netflix fault and not the unit.

Price could be a little lower but most would say that about anything. Great way to view online videos on your TV instead of the computer though so it’s worth the money. :)

Best Buy Roku SD Player onsale $79.99

Roku SD Player Review

The Roku SD box was incredibly easy to install and connect to my home wireless network. The device has performed flawlessly over the last two months. The video and sound quality of all Netflix streamed videos was amazing - everything was crisp and clear. I have not purchased anything via Amazon on Demand, so I can’t speak to that. The Roku SD box is an extremely affordable way to access Netflix content through your television set. However, if you are a person who watches a lot of online video through Youtube, Vimeo, etc., or have a lot of video on your desktop/laptop from Itunes or other sources, you should buy something else (or ‘roll your own’ - [...]).

  • Sets up in 5 minutes

DON’T BUY! - DogsRGreat - United States
I HAD FOR 1 MONTH! IT STOPPED WORKING! I CALLED ROKU AND THEY WOULDN’T REPLACE IT, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A DEFECTIVE UNIT! WHAT BS! DON’T BUY A ROKU!

Why did I wait so long? - R. Castro - Cicninnati, OH

Awesome!!!!! - D. Knapp - PA
this thing works great! It only took me less than ten min. to set it up with netflicks. I have it set up for wireless use, and I haven’t had a problems with it.
